“College Reality” Program Union County

Background & Need

Union County faces educational attainment challenges that limit career advancement and economic mobility. Workforce data shows:

  • 25.09% of residents hold an associate degree or higher.
  • 90.75% have at least a high school diploma.

Detailed educational breakdown:

  • 2.95% did not complete 9th grade
  • 6.31% completed some high school (grades 9–12, no diploma)
  • 44.9% are high school graduates
  • 20.76% completed some college, no degree
  • 14.04% earned a bachelor’s degree
  • 7.07% hold a master’s degree
  • 3.98% earned a doctoral degree

A primary barrier to postsecondary education is the perceived cost of college. To address this, Union County Schools introduced the “College Reality” program.

Program Overview

The “College Reality” simulation educates students on practical strategies for financing higher education. It emphasizes that college is attainable for all students, regardless of background, by equipping them with knowledge and tools to make informed decisions.

How It Works:

  • College Card Draw: Each student selects a college card that includes detailed costs—tuition, room and board, books, transportation, and personal expenses.
  • Statement Sheet: Students record their college costs and calculate totals.
  • Financial Aid Booths: Students visit booths representing financial aid options, including:
    • Scholarships/Grants
    • KEES money
    • FAFSA
    • Loan Simulation: If costs remain after aid, students visit a booth to simulate taking out a student loan and writing a check to cover the balance.
    • Pay For College
  • College Booths: Local college representatives are present to answer questions and engage students in conversation about higher education options.

Community Support:

  • Union County Extension District provides bags with marketing items and SNAP-Ed recipes ideal for college students.
  • Local Businesses volunteer staff to run booths and help deliver the experience.

Program Impact – Current Year

  • Target Audience: 10th grade students
  • Total Participants: 154 students

Post-Event Survey Results:

  • 74% now plan to pursue an associate, bachelor’s, or higher degree.
  • 53% said they would try harder in school.
  • 78% plan to save more money.
  • 35% intend to pursue additional education after high school.
  • 68% plan to start their college search earlier.

Conclusion

The “College Reality” program is a transformative educational experience that helps students visualize their future and make informed academic and financial choices. By replacing misconceptions about college affordability with practical knowledge, the program inspires students to pursue higher education and better prepare for life after high school.
